Why visit Liverpool?

Everyone thinks they know Liverpool, even those who've never been here. But Liverpool's not just about the Beatles, football or wisecracks. It's all these things - and none of them. It's about being one of the most vibrant, life-affirming and creative cities in the UK.

The Liverpool of today is a changed city. It's emerging as one of the UK's leading centres for learning, culture, entertainment, sport and endeavour. The award of European Capital of Culture 2008 (www.visitliverpool.com/site/what-to-do/arts-culture-liverpool) confirmed this. But if you just want to reminisce about The Beatles, and maybe spend a night in the legendary Cavern Club, then, of course, you can (www.visitliverpool.com/site/experiences/music-and-the-beatles).

Shopping (www.visitliverpool.com/site/what-to-do/shopping) ranges from high street names to independent stalls, boutiques and high fashion. Places to eat and drink (www.visitliverpool.com/eatingout/eating-out-home) are plentiful, and there's something for everyone's taste and budget - Chinese, Indian, Italian, African, French, Japanese, Thai, Spanish, Mexican, Greek and more. Going out in Liverpool (www.visitliverpool.com/site/what-to-do/nightlife) is not as expensive as some other UK cities, and the Liverpool crowds are lively and friendly, from the chain pubs to the smaller, independent pubs, clubs and bars.

Finally, The Adelphi (www.adelphi-hotel.co.uk) is an iconic landmark for Liverpool, steeped in history, and still housing a complete replica of The Titanic’s smoking room, but now boasting newly refurbished conference facilities. Choosing to stay at The Adelphi too will ensure quite a unique experience, so why not investigate the BNA’s specially negotiated rates. In fact, there is so much to do and see in Liverpool and the surrounding areas nowadays (www.visitliverpool.com/site/what-to-do, why not extend your stay and find out?

Where can I stay in Liverpool?

There is a vast range of hotel and guest-house accommodation in Liverpool, and most is within 15 minutes walk of The Adelphi. But why not stay at The Adelphi itself, an iconic landmark in Liverpool, where many emigrants stayed the night before sailing for the US. It boasts a complete replica of The Titanic’s smoking room among many other historical gems (www.britanniahotels.com). And many of you may remember the first ‘fly on the wall’ documentary called ‘Hotel’ in 1997 which featured The Adelphi (yes, Eileen is still there!). There are specially negotiated rates for BNA delegates that are very competitive, for instance, especially if you are prepared to share. Alternatively, there is student housing in Halls of Residence in Mossley Hill, about 3 miles from the conference venue but the price (£48 per night, en suite facilities plus breakfast) also includes daily transport into town. Student rooms can be booked directly by calling the University of Liverpool Conference Office directly (0151 794 6440). Otherwise, all other accommodation (including The Adelphi) may be booked online or by calling Reservation Highway directly (01423 525577). Remember to BOOK EARLY to avoid disappointment! (online booking for invited speakers and symposium chairs)

How do I get to Liverpool?

Travelling to Liverpool is getting easier and easier with the recent major expansion of Liverpool John Lennon airport serviced by many budget airlines (EasyJet, Ryanair, for example) to Europe and beyond, and the increased hourly Virgin train service to and from London, taking just over two and a half hours. International flights can also arrive at Manchester airport.
