The 50-year-old was arrested in a dawn raid at her home in an operation led by the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command.

She was being held in the police cells awaiting questioning after being detained on suspicion of conspiracy to blackmail.

The woman's arrest was one of three that have taken place across Europe in connection with alleged blackmail linked to animal rights extremism.

Detectives are searching the arrested woman's home in Croydon, Surrey and her place of work in central London.

In Amsterdam, officers from the Dutch National Crime Squad carried out a simultaneous raid on the home shared by a 25-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man.
