BNA Public Awareness of Science
Discussion Group

6.30pm - 8.00pm
Garden Room, Old Swan Hotel

To celebrate EDAB’s 10th anniversary, this event is one in a series of Europe-wide events that explore Neuroscience In Society.

Famous for a day?
(or a week…. or a month….. or years….!)

What is it like to be in the media spotlight? Terrifying or fun? Important or a waste of time? Is it a great experience or are you the butt of your colleagues' jokes?

Science is in the news every day and the world outside your lab wants to know more. Journalists need scientists and doctors who can explain their research in a meaningful way. And like it or not, without the media, people would just not get to hear about developments in science and medicine.

So, come along and join us for a glass of wine and find out from neuroscientists who have been famous - and survived!

o Quentin Cooper, presenter of BBC Radio 4 'Material world'

o Nancy Rothwell, University of Manchester

o Mark Lythgoe, UCL

o Geraint Rees, UCL

o Narender Ramnani, Royal Holloway, London

Hosted in partnership with the European Dana Alliance for the Brain

Art and the Brain
6.30pm,
Rose Room, Old Swan Hotel

Do you think that science and art are poles apart? Have these two worlds got anything in common? Tonight our speakers will talk about what one can discover from the other. Research into how the brain perceives art is of use to artists, art critics and art historians. Artists working with neuroscientists find new ways to express states of mind.

Speakers:

Sian Ede, Author of 'Art and Science' and Director of UK Branch of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation
Mark Lythgoe, Director, Biomedical Imaging Centre, University College London
David Barrie, Director of The Art Fund
Tina Gonsalves, Artist in residence, Institute of Neurology, London

Chairman - Richard Frackowiak, University College London

And later, get your own creative juices flowing and make a model of your brain. Scientist-turned-artist, Lizzie Burns, will show you how!
