N.B. Members of the BNA would be admitted to your event for free. A nominal delegate fee would apply for non BNA members (discounted rates for students), who would then be given one year's free membership to the BNA in return.

BNA Sponsored Seminar Series Application Guidelines:

Please contact your Local Representative by the end of July with your application.

  1. The BNA will provide financial support to Local Groups to organise seminars for the benefit of members. The BNA does not provide financial support for any event other than those organised by Local Groups or its own workshops, symposia and biennial National Meeting.

  2. Applications for funding of Local Groups should be submitted to the Treasurer, Dr Duncan Banks (D.Banks@open.ac.uk) by the end of July each year and will be considered by mid August.

Up to £700 is available for each Local Group, based on the following local membership scale. However, it should be noted that the BNA does not have limitless funds and that it may not always be feasible to support all of the requested activities by Local Groups in any given year.

      < 5 members £75
      5 - 10 members £150
      11 - 20 members £250
      21-40 members £400
      41-60 members £550
      61+ members £700

The need to introduce a sliding scale based on local membership stems from several facts: i) The BNA, like many charities, has seen a decrease in the value of its assets over the past few years; ii) The BNA anticipates an increase in demand for the funding it offers; iii) In common with other Societies, the BNA wishes to adopt a funding scheme recognising the number of local members; iv) The BNA hopes the sliding scale will encourage continued local recruitment, thereby strengthening the role of the BNA as the voice of UK neuroscience.

In some cases, where it is geographically convenient to do so, smaller groups in particular may wish to merge to form larger Regional Groups to make a single application for seminar funding reflecting the increased number of members.

  3. Applications for support should include:
    • (i) a list of seminars organised during the previous academic year
(ii) details of the proposed programme of seminars to be supported. This should be commensurate with the level of funding and number of local members, for example 1 -2 speakers for small groups (< 11 members) and 5 or more speakers for larger groups
(iii) a breakdown of expenditure of any financial support in the previous academic year. This is necessary as there is a statutory obligation on BNA to report its outgoings in its annual accounts.

Funds shall be used only to support the travel, accommodation and subsistence costs of speakers external to the host institution. Funds shall not be used to support local members or to pay for seminar room charges.

  4. Some or all of the funding may be used to support a single large one day event providing it satisfies the restrictions outlined in (3iii).

  5. All supported events should be open to BNA members to attend.

  6. BNA sponsorship for events should be appropriately acknowledged (e.g. on fliers or web pages) and that the BNA logo is used wherever feasible in advertising the seminar series. Once finalised, the full programme of seminars should be forwarded to the BNA for inclusion on a calendar of events on the BNA web site.

  7. The BNA will expect that the seminars and other activities it sponsors at a local level will provide opportunities to recruit new members, for example new PhD students, post docs or members of staff. Without increased membership it will not be possible for the BNA to support the Local Group seminar series.
