This inter-disciplinary project will investigate the role of endocannabinoid transmission in mediating the effects of cannabidiol and other cannabinoid drugs on fear learning and memory processing in rodent models with translational relevance for understanding the neurobiological and psychological mechanisms underlying anxiety-like disorders and their treatment. During the project the student will gain experience in various complementary experimental techniques, including behavioural testing, drug administration, and bioanalytical measurement of brain endocannabinoid levels. This work will be split across two sites in the supervisors’ labs at Sutton Bonington and University Park Campuses at the University of Nottingham, where the student will find a vibrant and supportive research environment. The student will also undertake a placement with the project industrial sponsor Artelo Biosciences, an ethical biopharmaceutical company focused on bringing proprietary therapeutic treatments which modulate the endocannabinoid system to market, at their UK or Ireland site.
Further Information
This project will be based in the Schools of Biosciences and Pharmacy, and will be supervised by Dr Carl Stevenson (Biosciences) and Prof David Barrett (Pharmacy).
Applications are invited from students who have/expect to graduate with a first/upper-second UK honours degree, or equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK. Students with an appropriate Masters degree are particularly encouraged to apply.
Funding is available for four years from October 2018. A full award would be fees plus an annual stipend. This is set by the Research Councils and was £14,553 for 2017/18. Eligibility for full funding is restricted to UK and EU students.
