An exciting opportunity has become available for two Clinical Research Fellows to become part of the Experimental Neurology group developing new approaches to Deep Brain Stimulation. Reporting to Professor Brown, they will have responsibility for carrying out key aspects of this project.

The group is embarking on a project evaluating the effects of adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) on the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease over both day and night. The project involves a close collaboration with colleagues at St George’s Hospital in London. Conventional DBS delivers stimulation all the time. Adaptive DBS titrates stimulation in time according to the state of brain activity related to disease symptoms, and may have fewer side-effects.

The successful candidates will have clinical experience of DBS in patients with Parkinson’ disease and the potential to learn electrophysiological techniques related to adaptive DBS. The jobs will involve patient recruitment, data collection and data analysis. The roles will also involve drafting a manuscript summarising the results. 

A PhD, MSc or relevant research experience in neuroscience, neurosurgery or neurology is essential for both posts. The successful candidates will be clinically qualified with current registration with the GMC, clinical skills and competence appropriate to current level as evidenced by recent revalidation or annual review of competence progression and the ability to work flexible hours. A strong commitment to understanding clinical research and writing research papers is essential

The ability to work well under pressure, manage multiple tasks, have excellent planning, organisational, and problem-solving skills and possess excellent communication skills and fluency in English are essential to these positions.

The post is full time for a fixed-term until the 31st July 2020 in the first instance.
