This is an outstanding opportunity to join the Department of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield, a world top 100 university. The Department is seeking to appoint three Academic Fellowships. Our aim is to attract exceptionally talented early-career researchers, and to provide them with a supportive environment in which they can develop their career as a research-led academic.
The Department of Computer Science is embarking on an ambitious growth strategy following our strong performance in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, in which we were ranked 5th out of 89 computer science departments in the UK. Research in the Department is organised into three broad themes, namely artificial intelligence, theory and systems. Within these themes, research groups cover interests in machine learning, cybersecurity, testing, verification, algorithms, complex systems modelling, natural language processing, speech and hearing, visual computing and organisations, information and knowledge.
As a Computer Science Academic Fellow you will contribute to our internationally leading research portfolio and our reputation for excellence in teaching. You will work on research topics relating to the theory and practice of your chosen research speciality, and engage with the Department’s inter-disciplinary research agenda by collaborating across discipline boundaries. You will hold a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline.
You will conduct research to the highest standards. Working closely with an academic mentor, you will publish in high impact journals, contribute to grant applications and co-supervise research students. Ideally you will work in one of the following research areas, which have been identified as a strategic priority for the Department (however, we will consider applications that align with any of the Department’s research groups):
As a teacher, you will deliver high-quality education through the design, delivery and assessment of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in computer science.
The post of Academic Fellow is designed as a route to an open-ended Lectureship appointment, once progression criteria have been satisfied. We expect progression to a Lecturer position typically after 3 years, and no later than 5 years, after appointment. We expect that applicants will have either 2-3 years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent industrial experience. The post is not intended for applicants who currently or previously have held a lectureship.
We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.
We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.
We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience. The Department of Computer Science holds a Silver Athena SWAN award, in recognition of our commitment to equality and diversity.
