Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship funded by the School of Psychology at Bangor University. The position will start in October 2020.

Project rationale and description: This project focuses on the effects of various kinds of uncertainty on peoples’ reward-seeking behaviours, with a focus on the consumption of alcohol, gambling products and services, food and drugs. Learning more about the situational, social and psychological factors that promote unhealthy consumption could help us to develop better ways to help affected individuals. The project will use experimental (lab-based as well as online) and survey methods, and will suit someone with interests in cognition, behavioural economics, consumer behaviours, and social factors in health.
Facilities: The project is part of ongoing collaboration between in Rogers, Parkinson and Downing labs in the School of Psychology at Bangor University. The School offers access to outstanding research facilities and environment to support cognitive neuroscience, experimental, social and health psychology. Bangor is situated in a beautiful region of North Wales close to Snowdonia National Park, which provides a wonderful natural backdrop to professional life.
Requirements: The successful applicant will have a master’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. cognitive psychology and neuroscience, consumer psychology). A strong work ethic and genuine enthusiasm for research and a willingness to work with statistics are essential, as is the ability to work both independently and cooperatively. Programming skills will be beneficial.
General information: PhD students are expected to contribute to teaching in the School.
