The School of Psychology wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Neurobiology to consolidate teaching and research strengths in this area. The post-holder will primarily contribute to teaching, assessment and project supervision on the School's undergraduate degree programmes relating to neuroscience, psychology and neuropsychology. Dependent on the appointee's interests and expertise there may also be opportunities to contribute to the School's postgraduate programmes. The School is especially keen to strengthen teaching and research on the following topics:

  •  Pathophysiology of the nervous system - structural, functional, physiological and/or   behavioural changes that are associated  with pathological disease states
  •  Molecular and cellular basis of nervous system components and brain function
  •  Mechanisms of neurotransmission and cell signalling
  •  Neurotransmitter receptors and pre- and post-synaptic events
  •  Experimental techniques and models used in molecular neurobiology

The School of Psychology offers staff a supportive and collegiate environment, with carefully managed teaching and administration loads. The School of Psychology is one of four schools in the Faculty of Science & Technology and is located in the purpose-built Darwin Building. The School is well resourced, with an extensive range of state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment, including a Health Psychology Suite, a Child Observation Suite, a Virtual Reality Laboratory, an adult-focused Brain Imaging Laboratory and a child-focused Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory. Our key neuroscience facilities include EEG/ERP, TMS, tDCS, fNIRS and fTCD. In addition, the University has enhanced our state-of-the-art practical and research laboratories with the impressive purpose-built JB Firth Building. Laboratories include tissue culture, molecular biology suite, general biochemical laboratory and microscopy. The School of Psychology has a thriving community of PhD and MSc students and has strong links with international universities, NHS hospital trusts, schools and community groups.


Essential criteria for the post in terms of qualifications, experience and skills include having a PhD in Neurobiology or a related discipline as well as having experience of undergraduate or postgraduate teaching/lecturing and assessment experience, a good track record of peer-reviewed publications with a Neurobiology focus and a commitment to real-world research impact and innovation.

Excellent communication and presentation skills as well as good planning, organisation and collaboration skills are core requirements for this position. The successful applicant will have a commitment to participating in student recruitment activities, the ability to teach and supervise dissertations up to Masters level and strong initiative and team working skills.
