PhD Studentship: Quantifying uncertainty in Diffusion MR Tractography reconstructions

Closing Date
30 Sep 2018
Salary
£18,500 per annum (including London weighting)
Address
Developmental Imaging and Biophysics Group, University College London
Duration
3 years

Supervisors: Dr Kiran Seunarine, Dr Matt G Hall, and Prof Chris Clark

A 3-year PhD Studentship funded by the National Physical Laboratory is available within the Developmental Imaging and Biophysics group (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/child-health/research/developmental-neurosciences-programme/developmental-imaging-biophysics) in the Developmental Neurosciences Programme, UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. The studentship will commence in October 2018 under the supervision of Dr Kiran Seunarine, Dr Matt Hall and Professor Chris Clark.

The aim of the studentship is to develop new approaches to the reconstruction of white matter morphology non-invasively in the brain using Diffusion MRI and white matter tractography. The project focuses on how to improve estimates of confidence and uncertainty in the reconstructed pathways. Current techniques allow only certain aspects of uncertainty to be obtained, and improved quantification of error and uncertainty is crucial if the full potential of tractography is to be realised in clinical applications. This project combines advanced MR Imaging and 3D reconstruction with measurement science and statistics.

Applicants should have, or expect to receive a first class or upper second class degree.  The student will receive a starting stipend of £18,500 per annum (including London weighting) as well as the cost of tuition fees for UK/EU students (applicants from non-EU countries can apply but will have to personally fund the difference between the home/EU rate and the overseas rate).

To apply, please send a current CV including the contact details of two professional referees as well as a cover letter to Rebecca Sibley (r.sibley@ucl.ac.uk). Enquiries regarding the post can be made to Dr Kiran Seunarine (k.seunarine@ucl.ac.uk).

Deadline for receipt of applications: 30th Sept 2018, 5pm
