2024 BNA Scholars announced
15th March 2024
The Wellcome Trust Four-year PhD programme in Tissue Repair is a prestigious training programme run by the University of Edinburgh and funded by the Wellcome Trust and the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine (CMVM). The programme provides cutting edge, cross-disciplinary PhD training which builds on the breath of world-class biomedical research performed at the College.
Successful advancement of tissue repair relies on combining expertise from basic to translational research in areas of regenerative medicine, stem cell biology, neurology, reproductive health, inflammation and cardiovascular science. Such a cross-disciplinary approach will underpin the design of novel cell- and drug-based therapies that stimulate repair of tissues damaged due to disease, trauma or congenital conditions.
The aim of our PhD programme is to train the next generation of scientific leaders in tissue repair. Therefore, during the first six months of the programme, our students undertake two three-month rotation research projects and receive training in a range of practical core research skills. Following these first six months students are able to make an informed choice about the topic of their three-year PhD research project and their primary- and secondary PhD supervisor. To ensure a comprehensive training and broadening of their knowledge of Tissue Repair, our students attend discussion groups, lab meetings and seminars by internal and invited speakers throughout the Programme. During the last six months of the Programme students focus on writing their thesis and preparing for their final examination.
The Tissue Repair Programme is now entering its fifth year. Our first cohort of students has submitted their thesis and is preparing for their viva, while students who joined the programme in September 2017 have now started their three-year PhD research in the labs of their choice. Last month we welcomed seven new starts - our fifth cohort - who have just started their first research rotation projects.
Tissue Repair PhD students are awarded a studentship which includes their stipend, tuition fees (at the UK/EU rate) and a contribution towards research costs - all for the full four years. The Tissue Repair studentship also provides specific funds which may be used for travel and training, including that related to transferable skills and professional development.
