The human brain is a profoundly complex interconnected system, but it would be ineffectual if it ultimately did not produce action. Thus, sensation and perception, basic cognitive processes and even higher level cognitive processes all work to support action, and to predict and make sense of action outcomes. In psychology and neuroscience, action has been studied most extensively in individuals doing basic tasks such as manipulating objects. However, action is also a fundamental part of social behaviour. For example, we mimic the postures, facial expressions and body movements of interaction partners and we learn by watching and imitating others. We also have a profound sense of being in control of our acting bodies - a so called sense of agency.

In our lab we consider the brain as a system that supports and makes sense of action. We are interested in understanding just a small subset of the wonderful social achievements that the brain enables each and every day. We take a particular interest in the study of situational, personal and cultural factors that affect the workings of the acting brain. We use a variety of methods in our research including behavioural, neurophysiological and neuromodulatory techniques.
