This post represents an exciting opportunity to contribute to a project seeking to understand the disease drivers of neuropathic pain.

The holder will be part of the Spinal Cord Group in the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology, at the University of Glasgow, and will work under the direction of Dr Greg Weir.

This is a Research Associate position requiring previous experience in sensory neuroscience or a related field, in which the contribution of different populations of primary afferents to neuropathic pain will be assessed using recently developed chemogenetic technology.

The Spinal Cord Group is a highly active Centre of Excellence for studies of the neuronal organisation and function of pain pathways, composed of six Principal Investigators.

The group is an ideal environment for basic and translational neuroscience, employing a range of multi-disciplinary techniques from electrophysiology and anatomy, through cellular and molecular biology, to systems level interrogation of pain circuits. T

he postholder will combine genetic targeting of chemogenetic tools and sensory behavioural testing in preclinical rodent models.

Additional techniques which the holder will be exposed to include: viral delivery of transgenes, anatomical tracing of labelled neurons, patch clamp electrophysiology and confocal microscopy. We are looking for an enthusiastic, inquisitive and collaborative scientist.

It is essential that the postholder have, or be nearing completion of, a PhD in a relevant field. They must have the ability and motivation to work independently and to manage day-to-day running of a research project.

It would be beneficial for the postholder to have experience in behavioural testing of preclinical mouse models in addition to a strong ability to communicate their science orally and in writing.

The post will include significant opportunities for training and career advancement. This will be in the form of in-house training in experimental techniques, the opportunity to work with overseas collaborators, support to submit independent funding applications and attendance of international conferences.
