Postdoctoral Scientist in Molecular Neuroscience (2 posts) - University of Oxford

Vacancy Reference Number
141627
Closing Date
8 Aug 2019
Salary
£28,660 - £34,189 or £32,236 - £39,609
Address
Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford
Duration
1 year

An exciting opportunity has been created for two Senior Postdoctoral Scientists to join the interdisciplinary research programme studying Parkinson’s disease and related synucleinopathies in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences led by Associate Professor Laura Parkkinen. The group focuses on elucidating biochemical and genetic signatures in human brain and biosamples to assist with understanding disease pathogenesis but also to provide diagnostic biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease and dementia. These are much needed to improve early diagnosis of PD and assessing the efficacy of disease-modifying therapies in a biologically-targeted manner.

The postholders will develop alpha-synuclein seeding assay (RT-QulC) as an early predictive biomarker, monitoring disease progression and stratifying between different synucleinopathies and examine their toxicity and infectivity in vitro. They will also perform genome-wide quantitative trait analyses using neuropathological endophenotypes to elucidate the genetic variants that may drive the propagation of Parkinson’s related pathology and generate “pseudotime” cellular atlas of substantia nigra through the progression of disease.

The postholders must hold a PhD in molecular neurosciences or in a field directly relevant to translational neuroscience. They must have substantial experience in protein chemistry, cell culture, molecular genetics and neuropathology. Previously demonstrated research acumen, a track record of successful publication(s) and clear potential for future success is vital.
The postholders are also expected to possess excellent skills in scientific communication, both orally and in writing and have a strong drive to pursuing a career in academia. Previous experience of working with human brain and peripheral samples is highly desirable, including familiarity with basic neuroanatomical concepts.

A less experienced candidate may be appointed at Grade 6 (£28,660 - £34,189 p.a.) with a commensurate adjustment in selection criteria, responsibilities, duties and job title.

The funds for this post are being provided by Parkinson's UK (PUK) and Weston (WBI). The post is full-time for a fixed-term of 12 months in the first instance.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 8 August 2019 will be considered. Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
