Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford

An exciting opportunity has been created for a Senior Postdoctoral Scientist to join the interdisciplinary research programme studying Parkinson’s disease and related synucleinopathies in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences led by Associate Professor Laura Parkkinen. The group focuses on elucidating biochemical and genetic signatures in human brain and biosamples to assist with understanding disease pathogenesis but also to provide diagnostic biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease and dementia. These are much needed to improve early diagnosis of PD and assessing the efficacy of disease-modifying therapies in a biologically-targeted manner.

The postholder will elucidate biochemical and genetic signatures in human brain and biosamples to assist with understanding disease pathogenesis but also to develop biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease and dementia. They will also develop alpha-synuclein seeding assay (RT-QulC) as an early predictive biomarker, monitoring disease progression and stratifying between different synucleinopathies and examine their toxicity and infectivity in vitro.

The postholder must hold a PhD in molecular neurosciences or in a field directly relevant to translational neuroscience. They must have substantial experience in protein chemistry, cell culture, molecular genetics and neuropathology. Previously demonstrated research acumen, a track record of successful publication(s) and clear potential for future success is vital.

The postholder is also expected to possess excellent skills in scientific communication, both orally and in writing are expected and have a strong drive to pursuing a career in academia. Previous experience of working with human brain and peripheral samples is highly desirable, including familiarity with basic neuroanatomical concepts.

The post is full-time for a fixed-term until 31 January 2021 in the first instance and the position is to start immediately.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 13 January 2020 will be considered. Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
