2024 BNA Scholars announced
15th March 2024
Dementia is the greatest health challenge of our century. To date there is no way to prevent it or even slow its progression, and there is an urgent need to fill the knowledge gap in our basic understanding of the diseases that cause it.
The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative driving forward research to fill this gap. The UK DRI Headquarters team is based at UCL yet works across all six of the UK DRI host institutions. Collectively the HQ team is responsible for making the distributed UK DRI community function as a single institute, with a shared culture of intensely collaborative research.
The UK DRI is now looking for an experienced research scientist to lead our new Single Cell and Spatial Transcriptomics (SCST) Platform, providing collaboration opportunities and technical support across the distributed structure of the UK DRI.
You will manage the application of techniques in single cell and spatial transcriptomics to neurodegenerative disease research, providing expert knowledge in SCST, along with technical support, to scientists across all seven UK DRI centres. Working with scientists on a range of neurodegenerative disease types, mechanisms, and models, you’ll implement the best available technology for the job at hand and strive for excellence in data quality to help meet the scientific aims of the UK DRI.
The Institute offers 41 days of annual leave (inclusive of bank holidays and college closure dates), a generous pension scheme, access to UCL’s community benefits including lunch-hour lectures, exhibitions, and museums, as well as an extensive range of staff benefits.
The post is available from July 2022 and is funded for five years in the first instance.
You’ll have substantial experience in single cell and/or spatial transcriptomics in a life science research environment coupled with an in-depth knowledge of the SCST landscape, both theoretical and practical. Experience of handling and analysing datasets is critical, as are leadership and decision-making skills. You’ll have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to build strong, collaborative working relationships with colleagues across the institute, and demonstrate a collegial approach to research and a commitment to the mission of the UK DRI.
