Six Nobel Prize winners, 29,000 of the brightest students and over 8,000 colleagues, from more than 140 countries around the world. There are so many reasons why the University of Sheffield is an outstanding place to work. And here’s another.

We’ve just launched our fantastic flagship interdisciplinary Research Institutes, and they’re already helping to address some of the most pressing social, economic and health challenges around the globe.

We are now looking to recruit two Fellows to each of our Research Flagships: Energy; Healthy Lifespan; Neuroscience and Sustainable Food.

We are seeking candidates with an outstanding research profile and clear potential as a future academic leader. If successful, you would be appointed as a Professorial Fellow on an ongoing contract. You would have clear targets for research and leadership development over a five-year period. At the end of that five-year period, following the achievement of your research plans, you would progress to a full Professorial position within one of our academic departments, while remaining a key member of the relevant Research Flagship.

During your first five years, you will focus almost exclusively on developing your research profile, pursuing opportunities for high profile external grants, producing an array of high quality publications and exploring opportunities for partnership building and knowledge exchange and demonstrating the impact of your research.

You will have:

  • A good first degree in a relevant subject area.
  • A PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant subject area.
  • A distinguished record of international research in high quality journals / monographs demonstrating clear excellence, or an appropriate trajectory towards that.
  • Clear research plan for the initial 5 years of the Fellowship, aligned to at least one of the Four University Research Institutes.
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise in an area of research that aligns to one or more of the four Flagship Research Institutes.
  • A track record of collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches to research.
  • An excellent record of knowledge exchange, engagement and research impact.
  • Proven leadership skills with capacity for further development with early career academics in the relevant Flagship institute/s.
  • Ability to mentor and motivate colleagues in development of their research agendas as well as ability to contribute to their pastoral care.
  • Disseminate research findings through sustained conference presentations and high quality publications in recognised high quality journals, and receive a number of citations.
  • Contribute substantially to knowledge exchange within and across the institutes (where applicable).

Within your application, please prepare a short proposal on the research programme that you would wish to pursue (aligning to the Institute’s vision and priorities).

As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons. However, as women and black and minority ethnic (BAME) candidates are currently under-represented at this level in this area, we would particularly welcome applications from these candidates. All appointments will be made on the merit of skills and experience relative to the role.

We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.
