Some animals use distinctive and conspicuous colour patterns to warn predators that they are defended in some way. Despite being studied for more than 150 years, we still don’t know why these warning signals have evolved with such striking designs. You have the opportunity to help us run behavioural experiments to test novel theoretical predictions arising from a 3-year BBSRC grant. The grant combines visual neuroscience and behavioural ecology to understand what makes an effective warning signal, and is held jointly with colleagues in St Andrews.

You should be familiar with running behavioural laboratory experiments, ideally with birds. You'll be required to work independently in the laboratory, and should be comfortable handling animals, recording behaviours, and managing large datasets. You'll join an interdisciplinary collaborative group, learn new laboratory skills, and gain insights into different disciplines and how large scientific collaborations work.

This post is fixed term for a duration of 4 months.

Informal enquiries regarding the post should be directed to Professor Candy Rowe candy.rowe@ncl.ac.uk.

The project is funded by the BBSRC.
