Applications are invited for an enthusiastic Research Assistant with an interest in the role of behavioural training in promoting neural adaptation to hearing loss. You will be a part of the Auditory Neuroscience Group headed by Professor Andrew King. Previous work by this group has demonstrated that normal-hearing subjects who receive a temporary conductive hearing loss by plugging one ear can be trained to adapt to this imbalance in inputs between the two ears and recover their ability to localise sounds. We have also identified the strategies used by the brain to compensate for asymmetric hearing. To further explore the value of behavioural training as an effective method of intervention following hearing loss, we need to extend this work using more naturalistic hearing conditions that mimic the challenges of everyday listening environments, including tests of spatial attention. You will contribute to the preparation of ethical protocols, the generation and calibration of sound stimuli, the recruitment and testing of participants, and the analysis of behavioural data. You will have an undergraduate degree or master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as neuroscience, psychology, audiology or equivalent, though candidates with a computational background will also be considered if they can demonstrate a genuine interest in the research area. The ability to work accurately, keep good records and work as part of a team are essential for this post. You will be highly motivated and able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

You will be based in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, Sherrington Building, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PT. The position, which is funded by the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (Neurological Conditions), is fixed-term to 31 July 2018. An early start date is preferable. Interviews are likely to take place in the second week of June.
