Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to join Professor Andrew King’s laboratory on a project entitled Adaptability of the Auditory System in Health and Disease.

The successful applicant will join the Auditory Neuroscience Group led by Professor Andrew King and will have responsibility for providing research support across a productive and well-funded research team of approximately 20 postdoctoral scientists and graduate students. The role includes the opportunity to become involved in the collection and analysis of experimental data in different studies, on top of more general lab management duties. The overall aim of the research project is to improve understanding of how brain cells that respond to sound adjust to the statistics of the listening environment – a quiet room versus a noisy bar – and how their properties are shaped by learning, other sensory and cognitive factors, and by hearing loss. The successful applicant will have a key role to play in facilitating this multidisciplinary research project and in assisting with the collection and analysis of data in different areas.

They will be responsible for general laboratory management and performance of any duties as may be required to ensure the efficient running of the laboratory, including the management of lab stocks of consumables. They will assist the Group Leader with the financial management of research grants, including, where appropriate, negotiating with suppliers to achieve maximum economies of scale. They will also ensure that work in the laboratory is conducted safely and in particular that the work is undertaken using appropriate safety procedures and in dedicated areas. The successful applicant will supervise and train lab members in the use and calibration of equipment, procurement processes, including the online University procurement software (Marketplace), and lead or advise on the development of SOPs for specialist equipment. They will also be expected to participate in and contribute directly to scientific discussions with other members of the group and collaborators on the research project, and to work on projects outlined by the PI, include testing hypotheses and analysing scientific data from a variety of sources.

The postholder will hold a first degree, together with some relevant experience and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programs. They will demonstrable ability to gather, analyse, and present scientific data from a variety of sources and have experience with one or more neuroscientific techniques.

You will be based in the Sherrington Building, Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PT.

The position is funded by the Wellcome Trust until 31 January 2021 in the first instance.
