Ageing is the main risk factor for cognitive decline. This project will focus on the anti-ageing protein, klotho, which enhances the function of nerve cells, particularly the changes in synapses that are required for learning and memory. These cognitive-enhancing properties of klotho are mediated by klotho interacting with an unknown receptor on the surface of nerve cells. The aim of this project is to identify and characterise the receptor for klotho. The information obtained during this project will provide new opportunities for cognitive-enhancing strategies to combat age-related cognitive dysfunction.

You will have BSc (hons) and hold a PhD in biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, neuroscience or a related discipline. You will have extensive and up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge in proteomics, protein purification and characterisation, and extensive experience in mammalian cell culture and/or protein identification.
