A one-year post has become available on a four year ESRC grant awarded to Dr Lisa Henderson and Prof Gareth Gaskell in collaboration with Prof Courtenay Norbury. The overarching aim of this grant is to test and refine current models of sleep-dependent consolidation across typical and atypical development. The research is particularly focussed on examining the consolidation of newly learned language during sleep, via the use of EEG recordings to examine relationships between specific components of sleep and changes in memory.

Applicants should have (or have submitted) a PhD in Psychology, and a demonstrated ability to conduct and analyse experiments related to language and/or memory. Experience of working with children with developmental disorders and/or sleep EEG is desirable.

The Psychology Department at York is a great place to be a postdoc: it has a vibrant community of Early Career Researchers and excellent research facilities. The Department was rated 4th in the UK for research quality in the most recent research assessment (REF 2014). The Department holds a Silver Athena Swan award in recognition of its work in promoting gender equality.

Role

As a Research Associate in the Sleep Language and Memory Lab, you will conduct research and develop new projects under the supervision of Lisa Henderson and Gareth Gaskell. You will be expected to work independently, and collaboratively with others. We are looking for someone with a keen interest in the mechanisms of memory consolidation, who would be able to make significant contributions in the areas of development and/or disorders research.

Skills, Experience, and Qualification Needed:

  • A PhD in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience or another relevant field (or equivalent experience).
  • An interest in research on memory and learning (across development or disorders).
  • High attention to detail to ensure high-quality research at all stages of the process.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience writing results up for publication and presenting at conferences.
  • An ability to work as part of a highly-focussed and productive team, and also to work independently.

Please get in contact with Lisa Henderson (lisa-marie.henderson@york.ac.uk) or Gareth Gaskell (gareth.gaskell@york.ac.uk) if you would like more details, including the length of the contract and how it fits into the broader context of the grant.

This post is available on a fixed term basis for 12 months (with a possibility to extend to 18 months)
