Applications are invited for a Research position in the group of Professor Manohar Bance, Professor of Otology and Skull Base Surgery.
The position would develop research centered round understanding cochlear implant stimulation spread in the inner ear, and in the human head, and how to optimize cochlear implant stimulation parameters. The research plan involves measuring the electrical impedance of human tissue to build a map and model of current/stimulation spread pathways using micro fabricated electrical sensing arrays.
The group plan to use this information to build artificially fabricated inner ears which can be implanted with real cochlear implants, using the implanted electrical sensors to measure current spread. The eventual aim is to develop a platform for cochlear implant research and development based on a completely configurable 'artificial ear" that is electrically very similar to a living ear, but allows exact mapping of stimulation fields and how they are affected by different electrode designs, stimulation parameters, and change in the electrical mileu such as can occur with clinical conditions.
The candidate will have a background in complex 3D printing, with multipartite and multimaterial constructions. Experience with bioprinting or using biomaterials would be an asset. Experience with microfabrication and electrical engineering would be useful in this position. Previous experience with cochlear implants or implantable electrical devices is not essential, but would accelerate the development.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant specialist subject area, such as materials, additive manufacturing, chemical engineering, bioprinting or similar.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
