Address
Institute of Neuroscience, Newcastle University
Duration
Fixed term for 18 months in the first instance

Applications are sought for a Research Associate, as part of an inter-disciplinary team investigating optogenetic strategies for manipulating cortical activity. These studies will build upon our development of novel optogenetic tools for manipulating Cl- levels in neurons. We will use these, together with 2-photon imaging and electrophysiological recordings, to investigate how chloride is regulated in neurons. Our goal is to understand the role played by dynamical Cl- regulation in dictating brain states and neuronal signalling in cortical networks.

You will have a PhD and a strong academic background in cellular neuroscience or a related field. We are looking for someone who has prior experience of 2-photon imaging and / or electrophysiology, in vivo. Other related experimental experience, such as optogenetics, is desirable.

You will work independently and as part of an inter-disciplinary team, collecting and analysing data, communicating research and preparing papers. You should have a track record of peer-reviewed journal publications. Programming abilities, mathematical skills and/or electronics experience are highly desirable.

The Institute of Neuroscience has an excellent reputation in both network neuroscience and translational research, and is home to a large collaborative venture aimed at developing optogenetic strategies for treating epilepsy.
