The appointment will be on UCL Grade. The salary range will be £35,328 - £42,701 (Research Associate) or £43,884 - £51,769 (Senior Research Associate) per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

The Sainsbury Wellcome Centre (SWC) commenced research operations in Spring 2016 bringing together world-leading scientists to investigate how brain circuits process information to generate perception, form memories and guide behaviour. Developed through the vision and partnership of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and Wellcome, and with substantial investment from these partners, the mission of the SWC is to generate and test experimentally tractable theories of brain function.

The Margrie lab is focused on studying cell-to-cell diversity within and across different neuronal classes and networks, in the context of local and long-range connectivity. It is their view that only a detailed quantitative understanding of the heterogeneity in connectivity and cellular composition of the network can elucidate key principles underlying the design and operation of neuronal circuits in the normal and diseased brain.

The Margrie lab is now looking for an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to join the team and provide specialist support as a data expert. You’ll create, manage and maintain analytical pipelines and manage the catalogued storage of raw and analysed data. You’ll work closely with the SWC IT team to ensure the lab’s data storage is compatible with SWC’s overall infrastructure, and you’ll provide lab colleagues innovative computing solutions for experimental research.

This post is funded until 31 July 2021 in the first instance; the Centre is externally funded with funding awarded in five-year tranches subject to periodic funder review. Subject to successful grant renewal, it is anticipated that staff posts will be extended in line with successive funding periods.

You will have a PhD in Neuroscience or a cognate area in software engineering with a strong affinity for biology and fundamental research, and experience in analysing neurophysiological phenomena. You’ll be fluent in data programming language (Python, MATLAB, R etc) and be experienced with coding best practices (including version control testing) and digital image processing. Strong communication and presentation skills, along with excellent analytical skills and a good understanding of statistics are essential. Experience with machine learning techniques, digital electronics and 3D CAD software would be highly desirable.

Candidates wishing to be appointed as a Senior Research Associate at Grade 8 would be expected to demonstrate experience of guiding and supervising a small team of researchers and laboratory support staff.
