Research Fellow Alzheimer's Disease - University of Aberdeen

Vacancy Reference Number

Closing Date
27 Jul 2019
Salary
£27,831 to £36,261
Address
School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition, University of Aberdeen

The successful Research Assistant / Fellow will join a multidisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians who are focussed upon unravelling the mechanisms of cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease. Specifically he/she will be responsible for the analysis and understanding of multi-modal MRI brain data to develop a network approach in understanding changes in brain structure and functions in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. To achieve this he/she will investigate how Alzheimer's disease disrupts neural pathways and how the brain compensates and responds to such disruptions.

This position is funded by an RSAT project focused on developing a model of brain impaired functions in Alzheimer’s disease, based on the large-scale brain networks, rather than on existing diagnostic categories. Brain networks will be defined by both functional and structural connectomes. The objective of the overall project is to develop novel neuroimaging-informed ways to classify Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment. Neuroimaging-defined connectomes will be linked to specific behavioural and cognitive scores. 3D structural imaging, diffusion tensor imaging and functional imaging (from resting condition) were already acquired. This post is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in managing big data sets (stored across different neuroimaging platforms) and in utilising computational approaches in neuroscience.

You must have a PhD in Imaging, neuroscience or a qualitative field (e.g., computer science, engineering, physics) plus the appropriate level of experience that demonstrates the relevant skills in brain image processing and analysis. You will also be a qualified and creative scientist with training in the use of modern computational connectivity techniques applied to human neuroimaging data.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 salary scale and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience. Consideration will be given to applicants who are nearing the completion of their PhD who will be appointed as a Research Assistant on the Grade 5 salary scale.

Any appointment will be made subject to satisfactory references and a 12 month probation period.
