The Busche lab (buschelab.com), at the UK Dementia Research Institute at UCL, is looking for a highly self-motivated individual to combine in vivo electrophysiology and imaging with behavioural studies in models of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. The planned research projects are targeted to elucidate the cellular mechanisms that underlie memory and other cognitive impairments in these disorders. The post holder will perform in vivo electrophysiology and/or multiphoton imaging in behaving mice, process and analyse the electrophysiological and imaging datasets; evaluate and communicate results, publish results in peer reviewed journals and present findings at scientific conferences.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent in Neuroscience or a neuroscience-related or quantitative discipline (e.g. physics, applied mathematics, engineering, bioinformatics). S/he will have strong statistical analysis background and track record of writing and publishing high-quality scientific articles. Experience in systems neuroscience and/or computational neuroscience involving in vivo electrophysiology, calcium imaging and behavioural analyses is essential as is strong programming and coding ability (MATLAB, Python, other), especially with regards to analysing electrophysiological and imaging data. Candidates must have excellent inter-personal skills and cooperation within a multidisciplinary team.

Experience with anatomical mapping, optogenetics or fiber-photometry and biochemistry/molecular biology techniques including immunohistochemistry and western blotting are desirable.

The post is available immediately and is funded by the UK DRI @ UCL for a period of three years in the first instance. The post is graded as UCL Grade 7 with salary in the range £35,328 - £42,701 per annum including London Allowance. Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,922 - £32,607 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
