Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join Dr. Gomez-Nicola’s team (www.dgnlab.co.uk) to study the role of neuroinflammation in Alzheimer’s disease.

You will have a PhD and laboratory experience in a relevant area, with a strong biomedical component. Experience in areas related to neuroscience, immunology and/or neuroimmunology is essential. Having previous experience with in vivo models, histology and/or flow cytometry will be advantageous.

You should be an enthusiastic and well-motivated scientist, capable of contributing substantially to developing your own research project, a good team-worker and an excellent communicator.

Our team is interested in the study of microglial cells, the brain’s resident macrophages, in health and disease. This project builds on previous research from the group studying the dynamics of the microglial population in health and disease (Olmos-Alonso et al., 2016; Askew et al., 2017). In particular, we aim to understand and target the activation of microglia in Alzheimer’s disease, as a critical contributor to disease progression. The project is funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC), and is aimed at characterising the contribution of microglial cells to the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, using cutting-edge technologies of expression and phenotypic profiling of microglia.

This post offers an opportunity to gain experience on diverse techniques working in a research team within an exciting multi-disciplinary research environment. It also offers an opportunity to develop a degree of independence within a supportive team, including supervision of junior staff.

The University of Southampton provides an outstanding environment for research on neuroscience. The research group is part of the Alzheimer’s Research UK South Coast Network and the Southampton Neuroscience Group (SoNG), and is integrated across the disciplines of biology and medicine including laboratories with clinical and non-clinical expertise.

The post is available for a period of 3 years. Interviews are likely to be held in September. Informal inquires can be made to Dr Gomez-Nicola (d.gomez-nicola@soton.ac.uk).
