The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £35,328 - £37,281 per annum , inclusive of London Allowance.
We wish to appoint to a full time, two-year position in the Institute of Cardiovascular Science (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/cardiovascular). The appointee will join an exciting programme of work funded jointly by the British Heart Foundation, Alzheimer’s Research UK and the Medical Research Council. We have been funded to understand mechanisms underlying diseases of ageing, focussing on cardiovascular (heart failure, stroke) and neurological disease (cognitive decline and dementia), and their inter-relationships. Importantly, this post will bridge neuroscience and cardiovascular science to offer fresh insights into the complex associations between diseases that characterise these disciplines.
The appointee will lead on the application and analysis of non-invasive techniques to image brain function and the circulation, specifically brain and systemic oxygenation, haemodynamics and metabolism in study participants using near-infrared spectroscopy and the microcirculation using laser Doppler technologies. They will join a multidisciplinary clinical phenotyping team that includes physiologists, MRI imagers, and ultrasound technicians. They will help to plan the imaging modalities to be used in research, train and supervise junior researchers, desgn algorithms to process data, analyse findings, write publications and present at conferences. They will be encouraged to develop an independent research career and submit grant applications.
The role is grant funded till the 31st December 2021 in the first instance.
Key Requirements
The post would suit someone whose background is in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, vascular physiology, or medical physics. The ideal applicant will have experience of near-infrared spectroscopy, and/or laser Doppler, a familiarity with the underlying physiology, knowledge of programming in Matlab and experience of creating algorithms for data processing and analysis. We expect the appointee to have a PhD or equivalent degree, and to have a strong record of research in these fields. We place a strong emphasis on potential for independence and on supporting career development.
