Job Details

We are recruiting a Research Technician to provide technical support for a programme of work investigating endogenous opioid modulation in post-surgical pain. Experimental work will be conducted at the William Harvey Research Institute and clinical studies will be carried out at St Barts Hospital.

The research group/centre

The Sensory Neurophysiology group is led by Dr Shafaq Sikandar, and this project is being led jointly with Dr Sibtain Anwar. Research within the Sensory Neurophysiology group is focused on understanding neuronal mechanisms underlying the transition from acute to chronic pain, with a specific focus on musculoskeletal conditions. We also work closely with the Musculoskeletal Regenerative Medicine group led by Professor Dell’Accio. Within the group at large, there is a wealth of expertise in animal models, molecular and cell biology. Our group thrives on a very strong and welcoming team ethos that fosters synergies and mutual support between the individual members.

The Centre for Experimental Medicine and Rheumatology offers state of the art laboratories and is in the heart of the City of London. The Centre is integrated in the Rheumatology department at Barts and the London NHS Trust offering unique translational opportunities.

Person Criteria

The candidate will have a BSc in neuroscience, physiology or a related area. A specialised MSc in neuroscience is desirable. Experience of in vivo work in rodents is desirable. The candidate will be strongly supported to develop skill sets in pain behaviour tests in mice, in molecular biology skills and clinical skills for sensory testing in patients. The candidate will have good interpersonal and communication skills and is an enthusiastic team player.
