Applications are invited for a Research Technician to work in Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton. The appointee will join Dr. Andrews’ Neuroregeneration research group for a BBSRC funded research project to study both the extracellular and intracellular mechanisms governing nervous system injury and repair.

Applicants will have a skill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3 with proven work experience acquired in relevant technical support roles and job-related training.  A BSc or MSc/MRes in Biological Sciences/Neuroscience with experience in histology and microscopy is desirable.  Knowledge of or experience with neuroanatomy, primary neuronal culture and molecular biology is beneficial for this post.

Southampton is one of the best places in the UK for biological and biomedical teaching and research. The work will take place at the main University campus, in Building 85, which was recently constructed (2008; £47M) to house Biological Sciences researchers, and those who conduct multidisciplinary research in any aspect of life sciences as well as Southampton General Hospital.

This research study is intended to investigate how maturation of the central nervous system influences protein localisation and function in axons. Furthermore it will investigate how either modification of neurons, the neuronal environment, and/or modifications in growth-promoting proteins within neurons may alter axonal localisation and transport in vivo.

This project will use Cre-lox technology combined with immunohistochemistry, viral vector approaches, and imaging to understand how axonal localisation and transport can be altered in vivo.  Results of these studies will influence repair and regeneration of the nervous system after injury.

The applicant should have experience in neurobiology and knowledge of neuroregenerative mechanisms.
