The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is a joint £250 million investment into dementia research led by the Medical Research Council (MRC) alongside founding charity partners the Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK.  The UK DRI at Imperial, one of six national centres of excellence established to improve the diagnosis, treatment and care of people with dementias, is seeking outstanding scientists interested in developing independent research programs as Fellows of the UK DRI.  Research programmes should address fundamental neuroscientific opportunities with the ultimate aim of improving health outcomes for people with dementia or those at risk.

While we welcome applications from outstanding scientists without previous experience specifically in neurodegeneration research who wish to shift to a focus on dementia, we are particularly interested to consider applications from those experienced in the area who have been working with in vitro or animal models of aspects of the biology of the dementias.  There will be special opportunities for research that would have strong synergies with existing Imperial College UK DRI programmes addressing neuronal homeostatic mechanisms, neuronal-glial interactions and their modulation by the microbiome and circadian mechanisms.    However, we also are committed to employing people who will add to diversity amongst our staff and approaches. Successful appointees will be expected to enhance the reputation of the Department in the field of dementia research through the development of research programmes, contributing to effective teaching and training, and supporting the good governance of the Division. More generally, the post-holder will be expected to inspire collaboration within the Division and enhance its intellectual community.

Imperial College provides an outstanding environment for basic and translational research, and supports academics through tailored training programmes, with mentoring and comprehensive administrative support. This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual with the ability to develop their original ideas, lead a research group and work to be among the best in the field. Suitably qualified candidates will be considered for generous, long-term research support awards within the UK Dementia Research Institute as UK DRI Fellows. A description of the UK DRI and the UK DRI at Imperial College London is found in the Application Pack and Further Particulars

Imperial College is supportive of part-time working.  The department is happy to discuss the possibility of implementing such arrangements for this post, with suitably qualified people subject to operational requirements.
