2024 BNA Scholars announced
15th March 2024
A Senior Research Associate position is available in the School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, to investigate the effects of environmental pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; PAHs) on ion channels in the heart. This position arises as part of a British Heart Foundation funded collaborative project between the universities of Manchester (Dr Holly Shiels) and Bristol (Prof Jules Hancox and Dr Chris Dempsey). Acute exposure to air pollution is associated with a range of adverse cardiovascular events including heart attacks, strokes, and irregular heart rhythms, particularly in people already at risk for these conditions. The mechanisms of cardiotoxicity are complex and can be attributed in part, to nanoparticles containing PAHs. The research aims to identify and elucidate ion channel-PAH interactions that may mediate unwanted effects on the heart.
To undertake this work you should have a strong interest and practical experience in electrophysiology/ion channel biology.
The closing date for applications is midnight on Sunday 8 April 2018.
