2024 BNA Scholars announced
15th March 2024
Dementia is the biggest health challenge of our century. To date, there is no way to prevent it or even slow its progression, and there is an urgent need to fill the knowledge gap in our basic understanding of the diseases that cause it.
The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative driving forward research to fill this gap.
UCL’s strength in combining excellent clinical and basic neuroscience research to advance our understanding of neurodegeneration and identify novel targets and therapeutic approaches for dementia resulted in its selection as the hub of the UK DRI. Research at the ?UK DRI at UCL?covers the journey from the person living with dementia to the laboratory and back again - with improved diagnosis and potential therapies put to the test. The groups believe in intervening earlier in disease in order to change the trajectory.
The Wiseman research group at the UK DRI at UCL are looking for a Senior Research Fellow to join the team at the Mary Lyon Centre (MLC) at the MRC Harwell Institute in Oxford.
You will develop novel assessment methods for the quantification of mouse behaviour and cognition. Key to the role will be working collaboratively with Dr Wiseman on the integration of this data with the results of molecular, cellular and whole organism phenotyping to determine the neurological basis of these alterations, providing a ground-breaking new mechanistic understanding of neurodegeneration.
You will have a PhD in Neuroscience, coupled with experience in the development of phenotypic assessment of mice and experimental design of mouse studies, and demonstrable experience of leading independent research projects, including training and supervising staff or students. Experience of statistical analysis of experimental datasets using R or SPSS is essential. Programming proficiency at advanced level in MATLAB and Python, plus an understanding of rodent behaviour and familiarity with DeepLabCut or DeepSqueak would be highly desirable.
For informal enquiries about the role please contact Dr Frances Wiseman (f.wiseman@ucl.ac.uk).
