Job details

Dementia is the biggest health challenge of our century. To date, there is no way to prevent it or even slow its progression, and there is an urgent need to fill the knowledge gap in our basic understanding of the diseases that cause it.

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative driving forward research to fill this gap.

UCL’s strength in combining excellent clinical and basic neuroscience research to advance our understanding of neurodegeneration and identify novel targets and therapeutic approaches for dementia resulted in its selection as the hub of the UK DRI. Research at the ?UK DRI at UCL?covers the journey from the person living with dementia to the laboratory and back again - with improved diagnosis and potential therapies put to the test. The groups believe in intervening earlier in disease in order to change the trajectory.

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented senior research technician who thrives in working in a fast-paced and innovative research environment. The successful candidate will be supporting the group’s research programme and directly contributing to research projects. This will include performing aseptic stereotaxic surgeries, handling and care of mice, training mice in behavioural tasks, imaging of live and fixed preparations, carrying out histological and molecular work, helping to collect and collate data with other team members, performing of the analyses of imaging, electrophysiology and behavioural datasets, as well as other general laboratory tasks.

Person criteria

Applicants must have a Degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent in Neuroscience, Biology, Biomedical Engineering or comparable subject, or equivalent experience. Practical experience in handling, monitoring and caring of rodents, including post-operative medication, training of rodents in behavioural tasks, and with rodent surgeries is essential.

Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary setting, excellent time management, organisational, problem solving, and analytical skills are also required.
