Senior Scientist/Investigator - GSK

Vacancy Reference Number
184360
Closing Date
28 Oct 2018
Address
Stevenage, Hertfordshire
Duration
Permanent

Position: Full-Time Regular
Functional area: Research & Development
Location: Stevenage, Hertfordshire

Your Responsibilities:
Within the ImmunoInflammation Therapy Area, the Cytokine, Chemokine and Complement Discovery Performance Unit (C3 DPU) provides an integrated focus for GSK in cytokines, chemokines and the complement system with a balanced portfolio of early stage drug discovery in the field of complement and clinical development programs targeting cytokine and chemokine biology. The C3 DPU strategy is to identify and validate therapeutic targets, to develop and optimise therapeutic molecules to these targets and conduct small, focused, experimental medicine proof of mechanism studies that establish a clear understanding between drug exposure, target occupancy, and pharmacodynamic effect.

We are looking to recruit several experienced scientists with expertise in complex cell culture systems, neuroimmunology, pain biology, immunology or pharmacology to help drive development of therapeutic molecules to treat immunoinflammatory diseases with a focus on mechanistic experimental and translational studies. Remuneration will be according to skills and experience.

To succeed in the roles, we are looking for candidates who are:
• Capable of working in a team and possess a good balance of creative, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Maintain a disciplined approach, ensuring a relentless focus on quality, compliance, scientific rigour, data integrity and operational excellence
• Able to consider the bigger picture while also maintaining an appropriate attention to detail
• Able to communicate complete and accurate information while maintaining confidentiality
• Able to lead internal and external collaborations
• Able to represent the DPU at scientific meetings
• Proactive in exploring the best approaches and work collaboratively to harness expertise within and outside of the business

IN VITRO CELL BIOLOGIST:

This is a senior laboratory-based position and the successful candidate will be responsible for the development of complex in vitro cell culture systems to explore key questions for our discovery programs (e.g. target validation, mechanistic studies). He/she will bring expertise in:
• Cell biology / immunology / neuroinflammation
• Complex cell culture systems, preferably with primary cells
• Characterising such systems (e.g. microscopy, gene expression, signalling, immunoassays)
Experience in analysing and interpreting big datasets, including ‘omics’ data, would be an advantage.

Basic qualifications:
• PhD in Immunology, Biomedical/Biological science or Pharmacology or equivalent experience
• Proven knowledge of immunology and/or cell biology

IMMUNOLOGIST:

This is a senior laboratory-based position and the successful candidate will be responsible for developing, performing and/or overseeing various research activities with a focus on immunological mechanisms. Examples include flow cytometric immunophenotyping, in vivo studies of inflammation and in vitro complex co-culture cell systems. He/she will bring expertise in:
• Immunology
• Flow cytometry
• In vivo studies
• Cell biology and signalling
Experience in analysing and interpreting big datasets, including ‘omics’ data or expertise in neuroimmunology, would be an advantage.

Basic qualifications:
• PhD in Immunology, Biomedical/Biological science or Pharmacology or equivalent experience
• Proven knowledge of immunology

INFLAMMATORY PAIN BIOLOGY EXPERT:

This is a senior laboratory-based position and the successful candidate will be responsible for designing, performing and/or overseeing research activity focussed on in vitro pain models and in vivo pain behaviour models. He/she will bring expertise in:
• Inflammation/immunology related pain mechanisms
• Pain biology
• Human in vitro pain models
• In vivo pain models

Basic qualifications:
• PhD in Neuroscience, Immunology, Biomedical/Biological science or Pharmacology or equivalent experience
• Proven knowledge of pain biology

IN VITRO ENZYMOLOGIST/PHARMACOLOGIST:

This is a senior laboratory-based position and the successful candidate will be responsible for designing and executing experimental strategies to define and interrogate mechanisms of action of new drug molecules with their respective targets. These strategies will include the use of multiple technologies, automation and software solutions to enable both routine and complex experimental delivery and efficient analysis. He/she will bring expertise in:
• In vitro analysis of enzyme drug targets and protein:protein interactions
• Characterising the mechanism of action of novel drug molecules
• Understanding the properties of novel drug molecules, such as kinetic parameters and affinities of interactions
• Design and development of in vitro biochemical assays utilising a wide range of technologies
Experience in also understanding the cellular pharmacology of drug targets and molecules would be an additional desired skillset

Basic qualifications:
• PhD in Enzymology or Pharmacology or equivalent experience
• Proven knowledge of biochemical approaches to understand drug target and drug molecule biology
