Job Details

Dementia is the biggest health challenge of our century. To date, there is no way to prevent it or even slow its progression, and there is an urgent need to fill the knowledge gap in our basic understanding of the diseases that cause it.

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative driving forward research to fill this gap.

UCL’s strength in combining excellent clinical and basic neuroscience research to advance our understanding of neurodegeneration and identify novel targets and therapeutic approaches for dementia resulted in its selection as the hub of the UK DRI. Research at the UK DRI at UCL?covers the journey from the person living with dementia to the laboratory and back again - with improved diagnosis and potential therapies put to the test. The groups believe in intervening earlier in disease in order to change the trajectory.

UCL has a major collaboration with Eisai, one of the world's leading research and development based pharmaceutical companies. The UCL-Eisai collaboration aims to discover and develop novel therapeutic agents for the treatment of neurological diseases.

The post-holder will work collaboratively with scientists at both UCL and Eisai to consolidate the multi-disciplinary expertise from both organisations, and will be expected to make significant intellectual contributions to the progression of projects.

This is a laboratory-based role which is central to research activities within the UCL-Eisai collaboration. The post is funded for two years in the first instance.

Person Criteria

The Research Fellow – Therapeutic Innovation Group (TIG) Scientist will conduct research to enable the TIG to critically assess new project possibilities, playing an active role in exploring external ideas and potential new paths to drug discovery.

Main duties include contributing to the design, set up and reporting on a range of experiments in relation to drug discovery projects as part of the UCL-Eisai joint research initiative. The post-holder must have a PhD in a relevant subject, or equivalent industry experience, with additional experience in working in a translational environment and excellent ability to promote collaborative activity.
