Job Overview

Dementia is the biggest health challenge of our century. To date, there is no way to prevent it or even slow its progression, and there is an urgent need to fill the knowledge gap in our basic understanding of the diseases that cause it.

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative driving forward research to fill this gap.

The UK DRI Headquarters team is based at UCL yet works across all six of the UK DRI host institutions. Collectively the HQ team is responsible for making the distributed UK DRI community function as a single institute, with a shared culture of intensely collaborative research.

We are seeking an individual with substantial experience of running or managing boards and good knowledge of the private sector to provide senior-level advice and guidance to the Board chair and to manage the board’s activities. This will include advising on future direction and Board priorities, governance, stakeholder and partner relations, UK DRI macro finances, strategy, risks and appropriate mitigation. The role holder will liaise between the Board and Board sub-committees, the UK DRI Headquarters and UK DRI research centres to enable effective two-way communication and critically assess UK DRI activities, providing constructive feedback and challenge.

This is not a secretarial or administrative role, and secretarial support will be provided to the Board by the UK DRI HQ team.

The role is approximately one day per week (7-7.5 hours) Workload will fluctuate based on demand/work activity with hours adjusted weekly based on need.

Person Criteria

You will have experience of running/supporting Boards in a Company Secretary/Executive Officer/Chief of Staff capacity, and of working with and advising Board Chairs and Trustees. You will have a good understanding of how Companies House and the Charity Commission work, coupled with extensive private sector experience and the ability to effectively horizon scan. A good understanding of scientific concepts, jargon and contemporary themes would be very desirable.

How to Apply

Please submit expressions of interest in the form of a written statement outlining your interest in the role and experience to date, a current CV, and your expectations in relation to remuneration to Laura Allum, UK DRI Head of HR (l.allum@ukdri.ucl.ac.uk).
