This research investigates whether chronic psychosocial stress contributes to Parkinson’s disease pathology using complementary Drosophila and human dopaminergic cell models. By combining behavioural assays with molecular analyses, it aims to identify stress-induced mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration. These findings will help clarify how lifelong stress may influence disease risk and progression.
Shama Khiara is a PhD candidate at De Montfort University investigating the link between chronic stress and Parkinson’s disease using Drosophila models and human cell culture systems under the supervision of Dr Mohsen Seifi. She holds a BSc from Coventry University and an MSc in Advanced Biomedical Science.
