About the job

The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience is seeking an experienced and highly competent manager to lead professional services in the Centre for Education Development and Research (CEDAR), with experience of strategy development and delivery, along with extensive business operations experience working with finances, HR, and research (preferably in a higher education context).

CEDAR is a newly developed Centre for the IoPPN, created to enhance education practice across the Faculty’s programmes through supporting the development of good practice and pedagogy relevant to the Faculty’s disciplinary areas, so improving the student experience and learning outcomes. Candidates should be aware that the student-facing programme management (including timetabling, delivery, assessment, quality assurance) is the responsibility of a separate team in the Faculty through the Education Support Team (EST). The Centre Manager will work closely with colleagues in EST in order to fulfil the duties of their role. The CEDAR supports the Faculty’s delivery of its education, primarily the financial management and staff resourcing of education delivery teams including Distance Learning, Technological Enhanced Learning and Curriculum and Digital Innovation. A background in education programme management is not required to be successful in this post.

The Centre Manager works closely with the Dean of Education to review and develop the Centre’s strategy to support academic and teaching staff in the development of curriculum, delivery, and assessment to maximise student engagement and learning. A key priority is to increase the Faculty’s pedagogical research relevant to its education programmes, with the ambition of becoming a nationally- and internationally recognised hub of education excellence, providing an environment for ongoing professional development and innovation in teaching.

In addition, the post holder is responsible for monitoring progress against key performance indicators, financial planning and reporting, leading formal audits of the Centre and other formal submissions. The post holder will instigate and strengthen Centre interactions with colleagues across the Faculty and university, and with external partners.

Successful candidates are expected to have management experience, have strong communication and numeracy skills, and have experience of developing and delivering a strategy. Candidates should have experience of leading initiatives that have strategic importance in a complex organisation.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. Substantial vocational and relevant management experience demonstrating management ability in an appropriate professional or specialist area, and success in similar or related roles, supported by evidence of significant appropriate specialist knowledge.

2. High level understanding of university HR and finance policies and procedures, including financial regulations around spend, procurement and budget management.

3. Extensive knowledge of regulatory compliance in relation to educational activity

4. Experience of producing reports and business cases for senior management.

5. Experience of managing projects with multiple stakeholders, adhering to timelines, and ensuring they are delivered against

6. Highly proficient IT skills (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

7. Excellent administration and organisational skills with a high degree of attention to detail

8. Experience of managing staff in a Higher Education setting

9. Effective at working independently and as part of a team, able to take own initiative with a proactive approach to problem solving

10. Proven commitment to continuing professional development for self and wider team

Desirable criteria

1. Experience of delivering a project of change in an organisation / team

2. High level of numeracy and experience of data analysis / reporting via Excel dashboards and/or PowerBI
