Applications are invited for doctors with suitable experience to work as a full time Clinical Research Fellow in the Headache Group. The Group sits administratively in the Wolfson Centre for Age Related Diseases (WCARD), in the School of Neuroscience, of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience.    

The post will contribute to their development as an independent clinical investigator. The post is suitable for a clinician who is seeking to learn about research methodologies or to a post-doctoral fellow who wants to take responsibility for the organisation and conduct of clinical research within the supportive framework of the Neuroscience Division with a specific interest in headache. The research fellow will benefit from the wide range of opportunities and training available within the Headache Group, Neurosciences and Neuroimaging, and Health and Social Care Divisions to develop clinical research skills and a personal portfolio of research. The post offers the opportunity to receive specialist training in headache disorders in one the leading headache centres in the world. 

The post is full-time and primarily aimed at undertaking clinical research on funded projects investigating neuroimaging and neurophysiology of primary headache disorders, notably migraine and the trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias. We have established collaborations for cutting edge functional brain imaging to build on our expertise in headache disorders. We have established methods in the neurophysiology of trigeminal nociception and have established collaborations to extend our understanding of how sleep mechanisms interact with headache disorders. The post offers specialty training in all aspects of the clinical management of headache disorders. 

 

This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract for 12 months with potential for renewal. 

This is a full-time  post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • Able to understand underlying conceptual issues and scientific rationale/methodologies underpinning the research  
  • Able to convey this information and aspects of methodology/participation in simple terms to potential participants with impairments and relatives on a daily basis 
  • Ability to take informed consent 
  • Ability to communicate with other professionals in clinical areas both within and outside the unit 
  • Prepare reports and presentations for sponsors, regulatory bodies and funding agencies 
  • Upload accrual data on to the NIHR sites 
  • Prepare material for presentation at scientific meetings 
  • Administration of study intervention drugs with appropriate licensing and authorisation under supervision 
  • Monitor patients for adverse effects of CTIMPs using agreed monitoring protocols 
  • Requirement to be available for monitoring of clinical adverse events outside normal working hours. 
  • Collect and collate research data accurately and ensure completion of all data fields 
  • Image analysis and interpretation under supervision 
  • Perform analysis of collected data using statistical software under supervision 
  • Interpret research data for inclusion in reports and other documents.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria 

  1. MBBS or equivalent. 
  2. GMC full registration and license to practice. 
  3. Research experience at an early/intermediate level. 
  4. Clinical neurology experience in hospital/secondary care settings. 
  5. Ability and experience in dealing sensitively with vulnerable adults, disabled adults with communication difficulties and their families.  

Desirable criteria 

  1. MRCP or equivalent. 
  2. Good Clinical Practice Qualification (as well as working knowledge of clinical trial regulations). 
  3. Teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. 
  4. Publication in peer-reviewed journals
