Applications are invited for a Clinical Trial Project Manager to join the Professor of Ophthalmology’s research group to undertake a leading role in a new Wellcome Trust funded study “Deciphering AMD by deep phenotyping and machine learning (The PINNACLE study)”. 

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with previous clinical trials and research governance experience. The successful applicant will coordinate a highly prestigious five year research project on age related macular degeneration (AMD). 

The role will involve coordination of a multi-European clinical trial of patients with AMD. This will include project managing the flow of clinical imaging data from hospital eye clinics in England, Vienna and Basel and the Computer Science Department at Imperial College London. It will involve writing ethics applications and organising research governance for retrospective clinical data too. This is a “big data” project utilising artificial intelligence to help understand the commonest cause of blindness in the Developed World.

You will have a degree or equivalent professional qualification, and will have experience of working on clinical trials within the NHS, the commercial health sector or clinical academic research. Experience of managing ophthalmic trials would be an advantage but not essential. The successful applicant will be highly motivated, capable of independent working and have excellent organisational, project management and communication skills. You will be required to travel within the UK and also occasionally to Europe. A good understanding and experience of GCP and clinical trial regulations would be an advantage. 

Andrew Lotery is Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Southampton. The Vision Sciences research group investigates the role of biomarkers in identifying the early stages of AMD. In addition, the wider group’s focus is on understanding the basic mechanisms of this disease so as to develop disease specific therapies in order to improve vision. 

The employing organisation is the University of Southampton which offers a competitive salary, pension scheme and other benefits. The post is offered on a one year fixed term contract in the first instance with the possibility of an extension up to five years.
