About the job

Dementia is the greatest health challenge of our century.

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative supporting research to fill this gap.

Research from the UK DRI at UCL covers the journey from the patient to the laboratory and back to the patient with improved diagnosis, biomarkers and candidate therapies put to the test.

The Hong lab are looking for a highly motivated and qualified Research Assistant to support a project that aims to investigate microglia heterogeneity in neurodegenerative diseases using several state-of-the-art tools.  The appointee will provide technical as well as organisational support to the team and will utilise several in situ hybridization and histological techniques to study microglia immunobiology in multiple neurodegenerative disease models. The post holder will also contribute to in situ sequencing method optimisation, provide analysis support, and help the lab with inventory, mouse colony maintenance and other general laboratory duties.

Person criteria

The successful candidate will have an excellent undergraduate degree (first or equivalent) in Neuroscience, Life Sciences or a cognate area. Applicants must have an interest in the work of the Hong laboratory, and an understanding of murine (mouse) brain anatomy, immunology, neuroscience and of neurodegenerative diseases. Experience of applying specialist skills and techniques in a laboratory setting, translating to proficiency in performing cryostat sectioning, RNAScope, immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy is essential. Wet-lab experience of working in an interdisciplinary research environment studying neuroimmunology and neurodegenerative diseases is also required.

A strong interest in working towards a PhD in Neuroscience or a cognate area is desirable.
