Professor Narender Ramnani Steps into Presidency at the British Neuroscience Association
29th April 2025
Research Group Leader in Neurobiology
Starting Salary £57,305 - £77,154 per annum
MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK
The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is a research institute dedicated to the understanding of important biological processes at the levels of atoms, molecules, cells and organisms. In doing so, we provide knowledge needed to solve key problems in human health.
Our scientists tackle fundamental, often difficult and long-term research problems. The LMB has made revolutionary contributions to science, such as pioneering X-ray crystallography and electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) to determine protein structures, the sequencing of DNA and the development of monoclonal antibodies.
The LMB provides an unsurpassed environment for both young and established researchers. Scientists are drawn to the LMB from all over the world, thus creating a lively and international community for the exchange of ideas and innovation. There are four scientific Divisions - Structural Studies, Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry, Cell Biology and Neurobiology. Scientific collaborations between the different Divisions are extensive and scientists are well supported by excellent scientific facilities and by the LMB Operations Group.
The Division of Neurobiology wishes to recruit an outstanding scientist who will develop an independent programme of research in any area of neurobiology, with an emphasis on molecular and cellular mechanisms. You should hold a PhD and have an excellent publication record with outstanding potential for independent research. Synergy with existing research programmes would be an advantage, but scientific excellence and the potential for major impact are paramount. Current research in the Division includes protein misfolding and assemblies in neurodegenerative diseases, mechanisms of synaptic transmission, as well as neural circuits (www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/NB/). The position provides substantial core funding for your research and your group will be hosted in our new and custom-built institute.
The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is a research institute within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI is an entity that brings together nine partners to create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation, more information can be found at www.ukri.org.
Working for UKRI MRC provides a whole host of benefits including a defined benefit pension scheme, excellent holiday entitlement (40½ days including bank holidays and privilege days). You will also have access to employee shopping/travel discounts, on site sport and social facilities, as well as salary sacrifice cycle to work schemes and childcare facilities.
Additional information:
Appointments are made at Programme Leader-track level for those who demonstrate potential to develop into Programme Leaders within six years, or at Programme Leader level for those with substantial experience.
This role qualifies for endorsement by UKRI for a UK Global Talent Visa, for which the successful applicant is likely to be eligible to apply. Immigration costs (visa and health surcharge) can be reclaimed from UKRI after taking up the post (terms and conditions apply).
Submissions should include a covering letter and full CV, an outline of current research interests (1 page) and a proposal for a future research programme, which addresses an important problem in an innovative and creative way (up to 2 pages), along with the names and addresses of three referees who have agreed to be contacted prior to interview.
If you are unable to apply online please contact us at recruit@mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk.
Closing date: 30th June 2023
Final appointments will be subject to a pre-employment screening.
