Our client is a leading company, offering research services to the Drug Discovery sector. They collaborate with lead researchers and organisations to enhance the understanding of immunological, oncological, neurological and other disease areas. Based in Alderley Park, they are offering an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and hard-working individual to join their drug discovery and team as a Senior Scientist on a full-time and permanent basis. If you have a PhD in Neuroscience, with additional postdoctoral or industry experience and are interested in setting up exciting cell models to investigate disease within the central nervous system (CNS), this represents a fantastic opportunity.

The Role

This is a role suited to experienced scientists who hold postdoctoral experience in academia or industry. It is also open to MSc or BSc holders with many years of industry experience within neurobiology. Your research will have been focused on Neurobiology, iPSCs or neuroscience or the CNS. You will be responsible for leading neurobiology drug discovery and disease modelling projects. You will develop assays to characterise the response of CNS cell types (microglia, astrocytes, neurons, neural progenitors). You will communicate with external and internal partners. All of this will be done whilst communicating effectively with interdisciplinary teams, recording findings and following safety protocols. Other responsibilities include:

  • Culture and maintenance of iPSCs, astrocytes, microglia, neural progenitors and other cell types.
  • Evaluation of cellular and phenotypic responses of these cells within complex cell models
  • Use of high content cellular imaging techniques
  • Use of other microscopy techniques and in vitro assays (flow cytometry, luminescence and others).
  • Taking a leading role in liaising with external partners to provide clear updated on project progress.

Skills and Experience Needed:

Suitable applicants will have:

  • A PhD or MSc/Bsc in Neurobiology or Neuroscience (essential)
  • Several years’ of experience in a relevant postdoctoral or industrial role (essential)
  • Proven experience in culture and handling of iPSC derived neuronal cells (desired)
  • Expertise in neurobiology cell models (microglia, astrocytes, neurons) (essential)
  • Development of neurobiology disease models (desired)
  • Proven experience in leading complex biological projects (essential)
  • Well-rounded skills in general cell biology and the set-up of cell models. (essential)
  • Strong microscopy / cell imaging experience (desired)
  • Strong biological assay experience in: flow cytometry, ELISA (or other luminescence assays), cell proliferation/death/viability assays. (essential to have some of these)
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills. (essential)
