Dementia is the biggest health challenge of our century.

To date, there is no way to prevent it or even slow its progression, and there is an urgent need to fill the knowledge gap in our basic understanding of the diseases that cause it.

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative driving forward research to fill this gap.

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative driving forward research to fill this gap. We are a globally leading multidisciplinary research institute of 700 staff investigating the spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders causing dementia, with laboratory-based research groups located at University College London, the University of Cambridge, Cardiff University, Edinburgh University, Imperial College London and King's College London.

Cambridge

Developing new treatments that can prevent the onset of dementia or protect neurons from damage is hindered by our lack of knowledge in the fundamental causes and mechanisms behind neurodegeneration. Scientists at the UK DRI at Cambridge use cutting-edge approaches to build our understanding of the biological processes behind the earliest stages of neurodegeneration and ageing. They explore mechanisms causing the loss of vital connections between neurons and the pathways that drive repair of these connections, which are essential for memory formation and survival of brain cells, and identify key molecular targets for translation into effective treatments to stop, slow or reverse dementia.

We are now looking for an experienced Centre Manager to support all aspects of the Centre's operations, working with the UK DRI Headquarters team and Clinical Neurosciences support teams. The Centre Manager is a key strategic and operational leadership post critical to developing and enhancing the Centre's positioning as a state-of-the-art dementia research institute. The post-holder will work with the Centre Director to ensure the effective execution and running of the UK DRI Centre and projects on a day-to-day basis to enable key milestones to be met. S/he will take lead responsibility for the financial and operational management of the Centre including its staffing, equipment, health and safety, working closely with the UK DRI at Cambridge Laboratory Manager and Administrator as well as liaising with a wide range of internal scientific and administrative staff, external bodies such as collaborating research partners, laboratories, institutions and Universities and provision of regular reports (financial and progress) to UK DRI central administration.

Person Criteria

The post holder will have significant experience in operational management and coordination in a large, complex multi-centre organization. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate excellent skills in leadership, backed up by a track record of successfully delivering key outputs to deadline and within budget. An ability to develop effective working relationships both within the University and across the UK DRI as a whole is essential. Previous experience working in an academic research setting is desirable.
