Palace of Science is an annual science festival held on the 12th March at Wylam Brewery in Exhibition Park, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It is a celebration of scientific research and outreach happening throughout the North East.
The central hall of Wylam Brewery is transformed into a show case of science, with various exhibitors setting up shop to demonstrate some of the wonders in their scientific field. New for Palace of Science 2019 is “Scientist Corner”, where you can go to meet scientists who will be giving short talks about their research at various times during the event.
The event is held in a brewery so the bar will be open throughout the night for you to purchase some of Wylam’s fantastic beers (other drinks, including soft drinks, will be available). Food will also be available to purchase.
This event is a joint venture between the Institute of Neuroscience at Newcastle University, British Science Association, and the Institute of Physics.
Age recommendation: Palace of Science is an evening of fun interactive science demonstrations. The content is aimed at an adult (over 18 yrs) audience and takes place in a brewery so alcohol will be present. We welcome younger science enthusiasts but please bear in mind that this event is not aimed at young children. Under 16s coming to this event must be accompanied by an adult.
The venue: Wylam Brewery Palace of Arts Exhibition Park Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 4PZ. Located in the centre of Exhibition Park there is no vehicular access permitted through the park to the brewery other than for the mobility impaired. Such access needs to be pre-booked with Wylam Brewery. If travelling by car the nearest public car park is on Claremont Road. It is open 24 hrs and charges apply Mon-Sun (8am-6pm), free Mon-Sun (6pm-8am). If travelling by taxi please ask your driver to drop you at the taxi rank on Park Terrace NE1 7RX. The nearest metro stop is Haymarket (approx. 15 minute walk), the nearest bus stops: 10, 11, 30, 31, 45, 55.
It is a one floor venue, access for wheelchair-users is via a ramp to the front of the building. Once inside the building there is level access to the main areas.
Tickets: £4 available through the Palace of Science website. Payment on the website is via paypal, or a credit / debit card. Some tickets will be available on the door but these will be cash only. All proceeds go towards the cost of this years event and to make it bigger and better in future years.
