We are seeking a part-time Research Assistant in Motor Neuron Disease to join the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN). The post offers the opportunity to become proficient in the culture of fibroblasts, and motor and cortical neurons from iPSCs and to gain experience in neurodegeneration research as it relates to motor neuron disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). As such the post would be very suitable for a bioscience graduate who is considering going on to study for a doctorate in neuroscience.
Your key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: the provision of research support for the Motor Neuron Disease research group, contributing to: the maintenance and analysis of neuronal cultures derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from patients seen in the Oxford Motor Neuron Disease clinic; the processing and biobanking of biosamples (blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid and skin biopsies) from patients participating in a major biomarker research project entitled ‘A Multicentre Biomarker Resource Strategy in ALS’ (AMBRoSIA).
You will have experience of following and adapting laboratory protocols and selecting appropriate experimental methodologies, pursue a degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. biological sciences, including neuroscience), possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within the established research programmes, along with excellent communication skills, including the ability to write text that can be published, present data at conferences, and represent the research group at meetings.
The post is part-time (0.6 FTE) at 22.5 hours per week for a fixed-term of 12 months in the first instance.
