Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Neuroscience with a particular emphasis on chronic pain and improvement of its therapeutic interventions. To date, no medication has shown long-term efficacy and tolerability for neuropathic pain that originates from nerve injury. Thus, we seek to employ an ambitious and talented Postdoctoral Research Associate who will conduct a novel and exciting research work related to a project focusing on a novel histamine H3 receptor (H3R) antagonist and assessment of its potential as an antinociceptive drug regulating spinal and trigeminal sensory function relevant to the pathophysiology of neuropathic pain. This novel drug (owned by Novartis) offers an innovative strategy to control neuropathic pain due to its restricted penetration to the central nervous system (CNS) allowing it to act via peripheral H3Rs to minimise CNS-related adverse effects. Successful completion of the proposed project will potentially validate the drug as a clinical strategy for improving neuropathic pain control, offering long-term analgesia free from CNS mediated adverse effects. This is a collaborative study between Drs Paul Chazot (Durham University, Department of Biosciences) and Ilona Obara (Newcastle University, School of Pharmacy), directly supported by Novartis (Swiss) and funded by the Medical Research Council Confidence in Concept scheme. The successful applicant will be expected, following a training programme, to perform a series of in vivo and in vitro experiments using a rodent models of neuropathic and orofacial pain, behavioural testing and tool of molecular biology to validate the use of the new drug, define its mechanism and verify its peripheral site of action.
