Duration
3 years
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join Professor Simon Butt’s group, to work on a project focused on investigating the role of GABAergic interneuron subtypes in the neonatal mammalian brain. The project aims to examine how specific interneuron subtypes contribute to early network oscillations using a combined in vivo electrophysiology and 2-photon imaging approach. The overall objective of the proposed research is to determine the contribution of GABAergic interneurons to early postnatal cortical oscillations in the normal developing brain and conversely test the requirement for such activity by perturbing early interneuron circuits. This line of investigation builds on previous work in the lab that has used developmental genetics in combination with laser scanning photostimulation and whole cell patch clamp electrophysiology to map the afferent and efferent connections of GABAergic interneurons and pyramidal projection neurons through the first three weeks of postnatal life. The next step is to: determine the contribution of GABAergic interneuron subtypes to neonatal oscillations and then establish if and when interneuron function is necessary for normal cognitive development. You will hold, or be near completion of, a PhD/DPhil or equivalent in a relevant area of research. You must have experience with animal models, specifically rodents and be proficient in electrophysiology. Expertise in any of the following would high desirable: in vivo electrophysiology; optogenetic tools; two-photon imaging in vivo; data analysis; use of coding in Matab and/or Python. A Home Office Licence (B and C) will be required for this post.
